5 Easy ways to detect if someone gave you a counterfeit bill?

counterfeit

According to national studies, 1 in every 10,000 bills circulating in the US are counterfeit. It’s not always easy to tell the real from the fake, but here are 5 tips that can help you spot the difference.

  1. Bills worth less that $20 are least likely to be counterfeited. This means that if you do come across some fake money, it’s more likely to be bills worth $20, $50 and $100.
  2. One of the first things that can determine if  a bill is counterfeit or not is to see if the bill denomination located at the bottom right hand corner has color “shifting ink.” Most bills will have a number at the bottom right hand corner that changes colors when looked at from different angles.
  3. Have you noticed that some people will hold a bill up to the light in order check it’s authenticity? If authentic, bills are likely to have vertical strip that can be seen from both sides of the bill in bright or UV light. This is called a security thread. Here are the location and colors of the security threads on different bills:
    1. $20 – To the far left of the portrait. Glows green under UV light.
    2. $50 – To the right of the portrait. Glows yellow Under UV light.
    3. $100 – To the left of the portrait. Glows pink under UV light.
  4. Another trick you can use with the light is to look for a hidden watermark. There’s usually a hidden watermark to the right of the portrait of the same president. It can be seen from both sides of the bill when held up to the light.
  5. Last, feel the bill itself. Real US money is printed with raised ink. You can feel the unique texture over the portrait on the bill.

What do you do if you detect a counterfeit bill?

  1. If possible, write down who gave you the bill.
  2. Put the bill into a marked envelope.
  3. Call/tell the authorities.
